Audi announced today that it will begin marketing its small Q3 crossover to the U.S. next fall following a North American debut at next week’s Detroit Auto Show.
Its arrival will mark the most direct competition to Mercedes’ new GLA-Class, both of which are based on front-wheel drive platforms from their respective manufacturers. The Q3 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 200 hp. Base models will be offered with front-wheel drive while the four-ring brand’s signature quattro all-wheel drive setup will be offered as well. A six-speed tiptronic transmission is the only gearbox offered.
Audi discontinued the hatchback version of its previous A3 for North America, and the new Q3 could serve as a viable alternative to drivers who need the added hatchback space.
Its arrival will also mean Audi dealers offering three crossover nameplates in their showrooms: the Q3, Q5 and Q7. Compact crossovers as a segment are ballooning and the German three – like the rest of the industry – are rushing to capitalize on strong global demand.
