2015 GMC Canyon Completes GMs Revamped Truck Lineup

General Motors has just revealed the second midsize pickup truck in its lineup and the twin to the Chevy Colorado, the GMC Canyon.

Interior trim and style between this truck and the new Colorado have been made quite different, but mechanically both trucks are nearly identical. The same powerplants will be available with the Canyon as the Colorado, namely a base 2.5-liter that puts out 193 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque or a larger 3.6-liter that makes 302 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque.

2015-GMC-Canyon-Interior

A 2.8-liter diesel four-cylinder will also be an available option, but not until the 2016 model year. That motor is expected to make around 180 hp and 346 lb-ft of torque.

For transmissions, the base 2.5-liter is available with a six-speed manual though only in extended cab work truck, rear-wheel drive trim. All of the other engine and cab combinations are hooked up to a six-speed automatic.

The General has already promised that the new Canyon and Colorado will be the most capable midsize trucks available, but no specifications have been released yet. We do know that when properly equipped, the Canyon will be rated to tow more than 6,700 lbs. and take more more than 1,450 lbs of payload.

Out back, the Canyon comes equipped with standard bumper-integrated bed steps, thirteen moveable tie down positions, four stationary tie downs, a spring-loaded tailgate and can be had with a spay-in bed liner straight from the factory.

The innards of the Canyon borrow heavily from the updated Sierra, and offer a few luxury amenities that the Colorado doesn’t. Standard is a 4.2-inch driver information screen, while buyers can also get an eight-inch touchscreen that runs GMC’s Intellilink infotainment. Technology is abundant in the Canyon, which offers OnStar 4G LTE with built-in Wi-Fi hot spot, natural language voice recognition, Siri eyes free mode for iPhone users and navigation.

GM has also fit the Canyon with its “Teen Driver” feature which allows parents to set a speed warning or speed limiter. The system will also mute the stereo until the driver and passenger’s seat belts are done up and act as a data recorder so parents can view a report on throttle inputs.

General Motors is now the only brand with three different sizes of pickup trucks, marketed through two different brands. Just like with the larger trucks, expect the GMC Canyon to be slightly more expensive than the Colorado thanks to more standard content and enhanced looks.
