Volkswagen has unveiled its Beetle Dune concept ahead of its official debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.
Potentially previewing a production variant, the Beetle Dune concept revisits an idea that was originally presented at the 2000 Los Angeles Auto Show. That concept car, however, was “not very realistic,” according to the German automaker but the new Beetle Dune is “a lot more feasible.”

Volkswagen raised the body of the Beetle by two inches while a pair of skis will be bolted on to the roof for the show. The goal of the Volkswagen Beetle Dune concept is to show the vehicle’s go-anywhere intentions with its raised ground clearance and all-terrain look. Based on the Beetle R-Line, the Dune concept will be powered by a 210-hp turbo engine mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
